The Bahamas

The Bahamas

The Bahamas, located in the Atlantic Ocean, is a coral based archipelago filled with 700 island and 2,400 cays, islets and rocks ranging from uninhabited to luxury resorts and villas.  They are home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world and their scuba diving and snorkel sites are world renowned.   Other interesting things to note about these islands:

– The 2 most known islands are the northernmost, Grand Bahama and Paradise Island due to the extravagant Atlantis resort
– The name “Bahamas” comes from the Spanish term “baja mar” which means shallow sea
– The beautiful turquoise color comes from the white calcium carbonate sand and the color of light which is reflected off the bottom and unabsorbed by the water
– These islands were the landing site of Christoper Columbus
– Its home to the world’s deepest blue hole in the world called Dean’s Blue Hold on Long Island
– There is world-class boating and fishing
– One of the more luxurious islands in the chain is Harbour Island which is home to the famous Pink Sands Beach
– The Exumas are known for incredible boating! There are also lots of fun activities in this area such as swimming with the pigs, snorkeling the Grotto, hiking to Rachel’s Bubble Bath and feeding the “pet” sharks at Compass Cay! We LOVE the Exumas!
